Jatra
On a night at Manikarnika Ghat I watched people celebrating life and death at the same time — singing, dancing, not making a great deal of death the way the urban jungles do. Jatra is a confession to the ultimate journey I saw that night. Everyone understood the dead; but that person had to live first, through the years of ups and downs and the moments that taught them more than any academy could — just like the tree that witnessed the best and the worst of the winds and the weather, completing one ring at a time.
Jatra is about us: put on a boat alone in the middle of a river, distracted by birds and by the many strings we attach ourselves to with each year we live. About our possessions, about the things we own, only to realise that we alone are enough. We must enjoy the company of these distractions, but we must also acknowledge that we come and go alone — and would do better to sing and dance through all of it, because being able to live at all is reason enough to celebrate.
